The largest use of adhesives is in the construction industry. By far, the largest amounts of adhesives are used to manufacture building materials, such as plywood, structural flakeboards, particleboards, fiberboards, structural framing and timbers, architectural doors, windows and frames, factory-laminated wood products, and glass fiber insulation. Adhesives are used in smaller amounts to assemble building materials in residential and industrial construction, particularly in panelized floor and wall systems. Significant amounts are also used in nonstructural applications, such as floor coverings, countertops, ceiling and wall tile, trim, and accessories.

Adhesion Mechanisms of Durable Wood Adhesive Bonds

This chapter presents and discusses the current state of the art regarding adhesion mechanisms in characterizing durable adhesive bonds for wood composites. Particular emphasis is placed on phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) adhesives. An overview of current adhesion mechanisms is presented with an emphasis on categorizing adhesion mechanisms relative ...

Cellulose Graft Copolymers for Potential Adhesive Applications Bonding of Plastics to Wood

Bonding of hydrophobic plastic materials to wood to create new wood-plastic (polystyrene) materials with improved mechanical and physical properties that incorporate the desirable features of each constituent is difficult to achieve, This is due to poor interfacial adhesion between the wood and polystyrene components because of their inherent incompatibility. New, well-defined, tailored cellulo...

Improvement in Wood Bonding Strength of Poly (Vinyl Acetate-Butyl Acrylate) Emulsion by Controlling the Amount of Redox Initiator

Polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesive has been widely used due to its good bonding performance and environmentally friendly properties. Indeed, the bonding performance can be further improved by copolymerizing with other monomers. In this study, the effect of the adjunction of redox initiator (hydrogen peroxide-tartaric acid, H₂O₂-TA) on the properties of the poly (vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate) (...
